Mr. Nicholas Pioch is an expert in command and control, automated planning and assessment, knowledge management, and human-computer interaction and visualization. He leads the Decision Aids and Visualization group at STR. His research is focused on human-centered automation for a wide range of defense and intelligence applications, including C4ISR planning systems, multi-domain C2, social network analysis, activity recognition, and multi-sensor fusion and exploitation. He has served as PI or Component Lead for projects sponsored by DARPA, IARPA, AFRL, ONR, ARDEC, DTRA, and others. He has a strong track record of technology transition, including operational deployment of STR’s HAWK event discovery service.
Prior to joining STR, Mr. Pioch held Director and Section Lead positions at BAE Systems Advanced Information Technologies, overseeing a research portfolio focused on integration of technology for C2 planning and situational awareness. He successfully transitioned effects-based planning software to an Air Force program of record and led research and development of intelligence analysis tools that were deployed to multiple end-user agencies. Earlier, at MIT and BBN Technologies, Mr. Pioch led design and development of immersive virtual environments using verbal coaching and intelligent tutoring aids for training of Navy ship handling and remote vehicle navigation tasks.
Mr. Pioch received M.Eng. and B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of IEEE and ACM and has published over 24 patents and papers, including recent publications with University of New Hampshire on applications of the Visual Thinking Design Patterns methodology for effective visualization design.
